New Website coming for Camp Allegro Wichita

In case you've been looking for our website, we've taken down the old one and are preparing a new, updated version which we hope will be more user-friendly.  In the meantime, keep these important dates open as we are planning several events for 2013.

On Saturday, January 12, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., we will be hosting a concert/violin masterclass featuring Hal Grossman, our Guest Artist in Residence (yes, he will be with us again for Summer 2013!) and Laura Black, Artistic Director of Camp Allegro Wichita.  Following their performance, Prof. Grossman will hear and critique performances by selected camp violinists.  The masterclass will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 909 S. Market St.

Exploring Music Instruments: What Instrument Do YOU Want to Play? was a huge success last year; we have received many requests to repeat it this year.  On Saturday, February 2, we will begin registration at 12:30 p.m. (but advanced registration is highly recommended!) with sessions beginning at 1:00.  Students will again be able to try up to four different instruments.  This is an excellent opportunity to decide which instrument is right for you!  The workshop will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 909 S. Market St.

Finally, Camp Allegro Wichita 2013 will be June 24 - 28 with extended dates for advanced high school and college campers (those camp dates will be June 22 - 30).

Check back for updated info and news about our website. Questions?  E-mail us at campallegrowichita@gmail.com  or call (316) 684-3415.

Exploring Musical Instruments was a huge success.....

AND a lot of fun!  Thanks to an excellent article in the Wichita Eagle by Suzanne Tobias (see our Jan. 20 post for a link to the article), we had over fifty students from the Wichita area attend our workshop on Saturday, Jan. 21.  The students tried playing a variety of instruments, from violin and cello to flute, clarinet and sax to piano, trumpet and percussion.  Many of the kids simply showed up and registered on Saturday; we were surprised and amazed by the temporary chaos as parents filled out forms and our Artistic Director, Laura Black, made schedules for each child on the spot.

The hours of preparation and hard work were rewarded by the happy faces of kids of all ages; their excitement and enthusiasm for playing music made teaching the beginning instrument sessions an enjoyable experience for all of us.  The students were particularly receptive to speaking with reporters from KSN and KWCH and we appreciate the news coverage we received from these television stations.

And to watch the video from KWCH, click Students get the chance to try out instruments

A special thank you goes to our teachers: Laura Black, Ann Trechak, Michelle Yoder, Becky Schmidt, Phil Black, Martiya Schmidt and Nancy Trier-Metzger.

Watch for upcoming events of Camp Allegro Wichita.  In April, we will be hosting  Music Fest Allegro, an adjudicated event for student musicians on all instruments, elementary through high school.  And our summer camp session of Camp Allegro Wichita will be held June 18 - 22.  Camp Allegro Wichita is for all musicians: advanced, intermediate, beginners, even kids who don't already play an instrument.  Check our website this spring for the Summer 2012 brochure and application.

Questions?  E-mail us at info@campallegrowichita.org or contact our Executive Director, Nancy Trier-Metzger, at 684-3415.

Exploring Musical Instruments: What Instrument Do YOU Want To Play?

Camp Allegro Wichita is hosting a music instrument exploration workshop on Saturday, January 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for all youth (elementary, middle school and high school) to provide a hands-on experience with a variety of musical instruments. We will have string, wind, and brass instruments available as well as piano and percussion. Students may attend up to four beginning instrument sessions (30 minutes each). The beginning classes will be led by our camp teachers as well as music teachers from the Wichita school district; we are partnering with USD259 to encourage students to begin playing a musical instrument.

The cost of this event is only $8 and is open to all students (public, private or homeschool); however, we are especially targeting 5th graders who will be enrolling for their middle school classes in February. They will have the option of choosing to play a string or band instrument in the 6th grade. By attending a beginning class, students can decide what instrument they might enjoy playing.

Registration is not required but HIGHLY recommended. To register, go to https://docs.google.com/open?id=0By5UV3sbF6vLZWIxODM4MWEtMjQ4OS00ZDQ5LWJhNTktNzViYWU3ZDc1MTc2 and download the registration form, complete and email as an attachment to info@campallegrowichita.org; please bring your payment with you to the workshop. You may also print the registration and mail with payment to the address on the form.

The workshop will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 909 S. Market St. (located just south of Kellogg between Main and Market streets).

Many thanks to the Wichita school district and Simon McHugh of McHugh Violins for providing us with instruments for this exciting event!
